5th Grade Welcome Information

 

Parents,

We had a great start to school last week and I had an absolute blast with your kids! They’re such a cute bunch of kids and they’re being great sports about having to wear masks, wash hands, social distance, etc…

We covered lots of procedures and information last week and the kids are doing a great job of remembering, but I thought I’d also pass the information on to you all as well.

 

Reading Logs: A new reading log will be sent home each Monday. Students are to read a minimum of 20 minutes per night, fill out the information and paragraph on the reading log, and return it the next morning to be checked by Mrs. Sherratt. Once I’ve checked the reading log, I’ll hand it back and students will put it away to take home each afternoon. Students will continue to bring the reading log back and forth each day. Every Monday I will keep the previous week’s log and hand out a new log.

 

Math: Students were able to access the online Google Classroom last week and should be able to make their way around the ThinkCentral site if they need some extra video help or practice time. This (along with the other online classrooms) could also be helpful if your child is absent and would like to access the site to complete the day’s assignment.

 

Spelling: Please watch for a new spelling list to come home each Monday. If your child needs to take some extra time to practice spelling, they should schedule that into their daily routine. They can even take a couple minutes off of their reading minutes to practice spelling if they’d like to.

 

Attendance: Attendance is an important part to the student’s education.  This helps a student keep current on assignments, check work and participate in class discussions.  There are many school experiences that cannot be duplicated or sent home.  When a student is absent it is their responsibility to get missed work.  (I am more than happy to explain it to them.)  It is helpful if you have a friend take it home or have a parent come in and pick it up the day your child is absent.  Of course you’ll want to follow the Covid-19 guidelines for keeping students home if they are symptomatic.

 

School begins at 8:50:  Students should plan to arrive between 8:35-8:45.  (Please do NOT come earlier.)  School ends at 3:30, except on Wednesdays when we end at 1:30.  During the two weeks that we hold parent conferences school ends EVERY day at 2:30.  Upon arriving at school students should go directly to their classroom unless eating breakfast or paying lunch money.  When students finish in the lunchroom they go immediately to class.  Students will have a bell work assignment to work on each morning when arriving at school.  This is extremely difficult to make up if a student is late for school. 

 

Lunch: Our lunch this year is from 11:30-12:15.  It is helpful to pay for lunch monthly or weekly before school.  Lunch is $2.50, breakfast is $1.50 and milk is $.35.  If your child will be eating school lunch and has any food restrictions, the lunch nutrition manager will need to be informed.  We will have a few opportunities for students to be lunch workers during the year for one week time periods.  Please make sure to sign the permission slip for this.

        

Most assignments can be completed at school.  Exceptions would be math (especially when we get to long division etc.), nightly reading, studying times tables and a few projects that will be assigned during the year.  ANY work that is not completed during class can and should be taken home to finish.  Assignments need to be turned in on time.  A study hall is held during our afternoon break time on Tuesday and Thursday.  Students who come to school unprepared with any assignments are required to attend study hall.          

There will be a few assignments during the year that will require your help at home.  Math homework is fairly common.  Students will make a volcano (if we can figure this out with our new Covid-19 standards) at home.   Science Day is in the spring and we do a Famous American’s program in May, where students dress as a famous American and participate in a play.  We will give plenty of notice in our newsletters about any of these upcoming projects and when they are due.

 

PROGRESS PRINTOUTS:  COME HOME AND OUR NEWSLETTER WILL BE POSTED ON THE BLOG, TWICE A MONTH.  These require a parent signature.  Make up work must be turned in before the next printout (2 weeks.)  Students know daily what assignments are due and which, if any, have not been turned in.  We also have Worker’s Holiday activities at mid-term and at the end of each term for students who are not missing ANY work and have an 80% or higher average (also dependent on how well we can social distance, etc).  Some activities may be read-a-thons, dress-up days, kickball games, movies, etc.  Some of these activities may require us to ask for small donations to cover the cost.

 

Classroom Rules: The classroom rules are set up so that each student will have the best opportunity for learning.  Students can be recognized for good behavior by verbal praise, receiving a certificate, getting treats/rewards, or by earning extra privileges.  We have a class reward system where we earn class activities as well.  Consequences for misbehavior can be conferences with students and/or parents/principal, loss of free time, or missing certain activities.  Our school has a Wellness Room to assist students in achieving success in the regular classroom.  (A student will not be placed, long term, in this program unless parents have been notified.)

 

Rotations: On our fifth-grade team we each teach some subjects, which means that your child may be receiving instructions from all the fifth grade teachers.  During the Orchestra time, on Tuesday and Thursday at 1:30, the remaining students are placed in three groups.  They attend different classes on a rotating schedule (Not likely to happen this year do to Covid-19).  The classes are taught by the fifth grade teachers.    IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR ORCHESTRA STUDENTS TO HAVE INSTRUMENTS HERE ON TUESDAY AND THURSDAY!  Students must commit to orchestra for the entire year.  Orchestra will require practicing, but the benefits will be great! 

 

Reading Revolution: We have a fifth grade reading incentive program called READING REVOLUTION, where students can be awarded Judicial, Congressional, or Presidential awards at the end of the year.  Students will need to read one book from each of the eight genres plus four books, to earn Judicial.  Two books a quarter are “required for credit.”  If you will help your child (and we will also) choose the different genres for this, every child can earn the Judicial award just by doing the required reading plus four additional books.  In order to receive the highest level, Freedom Award, a student would need to complete 30 books, which is about one book every 1-2 weeks.   Students will complete a book report form for each completed book and parents sign it.  This can’t be done in just the last month of school but must be worked on all year long.  Battle of the Books reading counts towards Reading Revolution.  We will have our 5th grade Battle of the Books in May.  Be sure to do book reports on your Battle Books. Students need to do more than the “required” book reports in order to earn the Reading Revolution award.

 

Extras: We go to a PE specialist once a week on Wednesday. Our MUSIC specialist will come to our class once a week on Fridays and the ART specialist will come to our class twice a week on Monday and Friday. We will use Chromebooks and have the librarian come to our classroom on Mondays this year. We also have a science specialist who will teach each class twice a month.

FIFTH GRADE NEWSLETTER 

FOR MARCH 11, 2020

Parents,

     Can you believe that third quarter is over and we are to the end of

our school year?  Time has really flown by this year and we are really

sad that it is quickly coming to an end.  This time of year we have so

many things going on that it is really important to remember dates and

times, so always be sure to read the blog, so you are aware of the upcoming

events.

     Third quarter ends on Friday, so we will need all work handed in Friday

morning in order to qualify for Workers Holiday.  Workers Holiday will be

on Thursday, March 19th for those students who have no missing assignments

and have an 80% or better.  We will be going swimming at the Aquatic Center.  

This activity will take place in the morning from 9:30 to 11:00. Students can

wear their suits to school, or they can change into their swimming suits at

the pool,  but if they do come to school with their suits already on, they will need

to make sure that they bring under clothes and regular clothes to change into

once they are done swimming.  We will be taking a bus there and back, so we

will be back in time for lunch. We are asking for a  $1.50 donation for this

activity and will need it by this Friday.  Kids with swimming passes will not

be able to use them on this particular day.  We will need parental help at the

pool to help watch students swim. Parents that do come and help can get in

the pool if they want to, but don’t have to get in, if they choose not to.  We just

ask that if you do volunteer and have other kids that you make sure that you

know that they cannot swim with the fifth graders. The snack shack will not be

open, but students will be able to go down the slide.

     Remember that the fifth grade Science Day is coming up on Tuesday, 

March 31st. We hope students are starting their projects and aren’t procrastinating,

because that day will be here before we know it.  Please remember as your

child does their experiment that they remember to take pictures of any food, l

iving organisms, or liquids as they won’t be able to bring those actual items

in on Science Day. The school does have science boards for sale in the front

office if you need to purchase one.  Students will present their project in front of

their class that morning and right after lunch, then we invite parents to come and

view the projects at the end of the day from 2:30 to 3:20.

     We have our last field trip coming up on April 9th.  We will be going to the

Rosenbruch  Museum in St. George.  This will go along with habitats/environments

in our Heredity unit.  We will need a $2.00 donation for this field trip.  We would

love to have a few parent volunteers, as well, so let your child’s teacher know if you

want to attend.

      If you have questions about the Talent show, please check the South Elem.

web site.  It will let you know about the rules for the show. Students that signed

up for the Talent Show automatically made it; there will be no try outs.

     Remember that there will be no school next Monday and Tuesday and

please note that the next printout will be sent home on Wednesday, April 1st.

FEBRUARY 26

5TH GRADE NEWSLETTER 

        

    February 14th was a day packed full of activities. From our

class parties, to an early morning assembly, to our Worker’s Holiday

games, the day was buzzing, but the best sight to see was the HUGE

line of kids and loved ones lined up to attend Doughnuts with Dads!

At one point, the line was wrapped halfway around the parking lot.

Thank you for supporting such a great event for our students!

  Our last Worker’s Holiday was great fun, however we did

have a handful of students who did not qualify. The end of

quarter three is fast approaching, so please make sure you

are checking your child’s grades often and helping them set

goals to qualify for the next Worker’s Holiday. We are

continually encouraging students to stay on top of their work,

and of course,

we are always willing to help students understand assignments

if they need some extra guidance. We also continue to provide

extra study time on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons

for those that are falling behind, just need a little

extra help, or want to improve on specific assignments.

Our Famous Americans list will be sent home today.

Please look over the list with your child and help him or her

choose several people they are interested in learning more

about and who they would also like to “become” for a day.

Keep in mind that we help students choose fairly, but your child

may not get one of his or her first choices. This is the first

step in our preparations for the end of year program and it’s

a day full of excitement and fun.   

Our annual 5th Grade Science Day will be held on March 31st.

This is a day where students will share their projects with other

students and parents, however, there will be no judges or winners.

Students may complete an experiment, an engineering project,

or a research paper to present. Please refer to the information

and registration papers sent home today for further details.

Registration forms are due on Friday, March 6th. 

The next grade print out and blog up-date will be on

Wednesday, March 11th and will include more information

about the upcoming Worker’s Holiday.

FEBRUARY 12 

5TH GRADE NEWSLETTER 

        

    Thank you for meeting with us last week.  We look forward to seeing
the continued good work, and also for the improvements that we discussed.
Please, also help your child wear appropriate clothing according to weather
conditions.  We do go outside almost every day.
Please record students’ reading for the Lion’s Kite Flight for Reading.
Students can take their reading charts to the kite festival on
Saturday, April 25, where they will exchange their chart
for a kite or book.  Our school will get money depending on the
time students read. This is not additional reading, just the
nightly reading that is already required. 

Students will bring their own Valentine container from home.
Students need to bring a Valentine for all students in their class,
if they choose to bring them.
STUDENTS MAY NOT BRING IN A “SPECIAL” VALENTINE FOR ONE PERSON,
as that would need to take place outside of school. Each teacher
has given specific instructions to their class concerning Valentine’s Day.
Valentine activities will take place in the morning.

Worker’s Holiday will be in the afternoon on Friday, February 14
(Valentine’s Day). Students must have all missing work in
tomorrow, Thursday, February 13, with an 80% overall score to earn
Worker’s Holiday. We will be having a game day. Students will bring in
games from home,(Uno, Monopoly, Apples to Apples, etc…) to play with
other students. Students may wear PJ’s to school if they want.

The next grade print out and blog up-date will be
on Wed., Feb. 26.

February 17 (Monday)--President’s Day--no school

Fifth Grade Newsletter

For

January 22, 2020

Parents,

     Happy New Year to all of you.  Can you believe we are already half

way through the year?  It is crazy how fast time flies.

     We want to remind you of SEP’s coming up in two weeks. 

They will be held the first week of February. Conferences will

start that first Monday, February 3 to Friday, February 7.  Please

look for your scheduled time to come home with your child today, along

with a missing assignment report.   You will be registering your child

for 6th grade during your conference, so please be thinking, along

with your child, whether you want him/her to be in band, orchestra

or art next year.  These classes are the only electives you will need

to choose from. Each of our fifth grade classes will be having the

counselor from the middle school coming into our rooms to talk with

our students this Friday about what to expect for next year. 

The band and orchestra classes from the middle school will be

coming next week to play for us to get kids excited about joining, so

don’t be surprised if your child wants to sign up for band or orchestra next year.

     With Valentine’s Day approaching you should know that each

class will be having their own class parties and will have students

make their own Valentine catcher at home.  All students will need

to make valentines for everyone in their class, if they choose to

bring valentines.  

    The next progress report will be sent home on Wednesday,

February 12th. Please check with  your child daily to make

sure he/she is staying caught up.

     With the cold weather that we have been having lately,

we ask that you make sure your child comes to school dressed

appropriately.  A lot of students come to school in shorts and short

sleeved shirts with no jacket or coat to put on during break, and there are

days that they are required to go outside for a break and they can get really

cold.  This of course brings on sickness, which eventually is spread throughout

the classroom, so please make your child comes dressed in the right attire.
