5th Grade Newsletter
September 25, 2019
Dear Parents,
Our field trip this week was full of fun times, exploration, and learning.
Thank you to the many parent volunteers who were able to come and help
supervise the students. School pictures are scheduled for tomorrow,
September 26th and all students will have their pictures taken for the
yearbook. You should have received a picture packet with information from
Lifetouch. You should have a time scheduled with your child’s teacher to
attend an S.E.P. next week. School will end at 2:30 every day next week.
We look forward to meeting with you and your child to set goals and plan for
the year ahead. The PTA is selling tickets for the Family Movie Night
before and after school on Friday, and before school on Monday.
The Movie Night is Monday, September 30 from 4:00-9:00 at Fiddler’s Fun
Center.
The second book report for Reading Revolution is due on October 10th.
This book report is required in order to attend Worker’s Holiday on
October 15th.
Volcano Day if fast approaching and is scheduled for

5TH GRADE NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 11, 2019

Dear Parents,
We hope that you have been able to log into Power School successfully, and that you have been able to view your child’s grades weekly, if not daily.  If you are having any problems logging into Power School, please call Michele in the front office and she can help you with your login. We also need parents that have not signed the computer use policy and safe schools policy, electronically, to do that asap.  We will be using chrome books soon for certain subjects and if the computer use policy hasn’t been signed, your child will not be able to use the chrome book and may fall behind.
The first Reading Revolution was due yesterday.  If your child has not handed this first one into their teacher, please remind them that it is due.  If they don’t get it in by Friday, Sept. 13th, they will not qualify for Worker’s Holiday.
Our first Worker’s Holiday will be on Monday, September 16th.  Students will need to have all their missing work turned into their teacher by Friday, September 13th, with an 80% or better, in order to qualify for this activity.  The activity will be in the afternoon and will be a kickball tournament with a fun treat between games. Students who do not earn the activity will stay in with one of the teachers to work on their missing assignments. We would like them to get caught up, so they can earn the next Worker’s Holiday.
We still have a lot of starving student cards that haven’t been returned or paid for.  If you are keeping the card, please send the money in as soon as you can and if you aren’t purchasing the card, then please get that sent back into the school by the end of this week, if not sooner.
The fifth grades started their D.A.R.E program last week, but we still have a few students that have not returned their permission slips to attend this program.  If we don’t get them back by this Friday, your child will not be able to attend D.A.R.E this week. It will also count as a missing assignment towards Workers Holiday.
We want to remind you of the field trip coming up on Tuesday,September 24th. We have plenty of parents signed up to go. The students will need to watch the weather to know what to wear up the mountain that day.  We suggest that students wear long pants and tennis shoes; no flip flops or sandals. If students choose to wear short sleeved shirts, they will want to bring a jacket or sweatshirt, just in case it gets cool on the mountain.  We like the students to bring a couple of water bottles due to all the hiking we do. Students will need to bring their own flashlight, or head lamp to tour the cave with. Teachers will not provide flashlights for students that forget them, so be sure to remember to bring your flashlight/head lamp, or you can’t go into the cave.
The STEM math homework help program is still being offered this year.  If your child needs a tutor or just needs some extra help with an assignment this is one way you could help him/her.  The program is at North Elementary in the cafeteria. The times that tutors are available are on Mondays from 3:30 to 5:00 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:15 pm and Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:30 pm.
Even though earning the Patriot Award is optional, the fifth grade teachers are  encouraging our students to try and get this award this year. Each student was given a blue booklet of material that they will need to read, memorize, write about etc. When the students are ready to pass something off, they pass it off to the parents first, and then will bring it in to pass off to their teacher.  These booklets can be taken home, but need to be taken care of, because if students lose their booklet, they cannot get another one. Please keep it in your South Elementary folder, so it will be there when we have time to work on something in class.
We are still without an orchestra teacher. We will keep you updated.
School pictures will be on September 26.
     Running Club starts today.
The next print out will be sent out Wednesday, September 25th.
Thanks for all the help and support you have given us so far this year.

                                                    Sincerely,

Mrs. Little, Mrs. Sherratt and Mrs. Williams

P.s. Be watching for S.E.P. times to come home. S.E.P.s are scheduled for the week of September 30th through October 4th.
