September 10, 2018

Dear Parents,

We're off to a great start and ready for more learning to come! The students are learning the procedures of our classroom. One very important procedure parents can help their student with is the homework procedure. Most students are remembering to bring their homework back each day ready to be checked and reviewed. Thank you for helping your child complete the reading and math homework each night.

You'll probably remember from Back-to-School Night that in 3rd grade students begin seeing letter/number grades on their assignments. This is a new concept for our 3rd graders, so please take a few minutes and go over their grade printout with them each time I send a printout home. I plan to send home printouts twice per month to be reviewed, signed, and returned to school once I've got a few more weeks of data collected and entered. In the mean time, I will be printing out grades and going over them with students individually with each student in order to help them see how they're doing on various assignments. You can also regularly access their grades on PowerSchool. You'll just need to ask our school secretary, Mrs. Griffith for the information on how to set up the account, or add your 3rd grader to an existing account.

 Curriculum:

Language Arts:  Our class has been reading stories from classic tales. Our read aloud comes from "The Wind in the Willow" and has been a fun story to read as the students have learned about story elements. The students have also been learning some basic classroom reading procedures as we have read the story titled, "In the Beginning" together.

We've also been reviewing nouns and verbs as well as the finding the subject of  sentences. We've worked on dictionary skills and adding the suffix -ing.

Math: We have been reviewing place value as well as reviewing adding and subtracting with regrouping.  We will soon begin chapter 1 in our GoMath books.  In this chapter, students will learn how to round numbers up to 1,000, review odd and even numbers, and estimate sums and differences.   We will soon begin learning about multiplication and start memorization of the 0's and 1's multiplication facts.

Science:  Last year our PTA raised enough money to hire a new science teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. This will be an exciting time for our students to experience hands on science as they explore and learn in our science lab.  Our class will go to science on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 12:30 - 1:30, so we can look forward to that  beginning this week!

Spelling:  I'm going to hold off a little longer on beginning to send home weekly spelling.
